The Kurdish Demand for Statehood and the Future of Iraq

Hadi Elis

The author identifies the Kurds as an historically distinct people, who speak a non-Semitic, Indo-European language - Kurdish - with historical traditions very different from those of the Sunni and Shiite Iraqi Arabs, and sympathetically traces the history of the efforts of the Kurdish community in Iraq to achieve a degree of self-determination and autonomy/independence.
